Pour Over

Total Time4–5 min
Coffee:Water1:16
GrindMedium-Fine
Lava Tip

Use our Medium Roast Magma for the cleanest pour over experience — the caramel notes really open up.

  1. 1

Heat water to 200°F (just off boil). Rinse your paper filter with hot water and discard the rinse water.

  2. 2

Grind 22g of coffee to a medium-fine consistency — like coarse sand.

  3. 3

Add grounds to the filter. Create a small well in the center.

  4. 4

Start your timer. Pour 44g of water (2× the coffee weight) in slow circles to bloom. Wait 30 seconds.

  5. 5

Continue pouring in slow, steady circles from center outward. Aim to finish pouring by 2:30.

  6. 6

Let it fully drain. Total brew time should be 4–5 minutes. Enjoy immediately.

French Press

GrindCoarse
Lava Tip

Our Dark Roast Eruption was made for French press. The coarse grind unlocks the deep, smoky body.

  1. 1

Boil water and let it cool for 30 seconds to ~200°F.

  2. 2

Grind 30g of coffee coarsely — like rough sea salt.

  3. 3

Add grounds to the French press. Pour all 450g of water in one steady pour.

  4. 4

Give it a gentle stir to ensure all grounds are saturated.

  5. 5

Place the lid on (plunger up). Steep for exactly 4 minutes.

  6. 6

Press the plunger slowly and steadily. Pour immediately — don't let it sit or it'll over-extract.

Drip / Auto-Brew

DifficultyEasy
Total Time6–8 min
Coffee:Water1:17
GrindMedium
Lava Tip

Any of our roasts works great for drip. If you like it bold, go Dark. Balanced? Medium. Bright? Light Roast Ash Cloud.

  1. 1

Use filtered water if possible — it makes a real difference.

  2. 2

Grind 60g of coffee to a medium consistency for a full 12-cup pot (or scale down).

  3. 3

Use a fresh paper or gold filter. Rinse paper filters before use.

  4. 4

Add grounds and start your machine. Most drip machines brew at 195–205°F.

  5. 5

If your machine has a bloom setting, use it. Otherwise, pour a small amount of water first and wait 30 seconds.

  6. 6

Enjoy within 20 minutes of brewing. Never reheat brewed coffee.

Espresso

Total Time25–30 sec
Coffee:Water1:2

Lava Tip

Our Espresso Lava Flow is dialed in specifically for espresso extraction. Skip the guesswork.

  1. 1

Heat your machine for at least 20 minutes. A cold machine ruins espresso.

  2. 2

Grind 18g of coffee very fine — like powdered sugar, but not quite.

  3. 3

Distribute grounds evenly in the portafilter, then tamp with 30lbs of pressure. Keep it level.

  4. 4

Lock the portafilter in and start the shot immediately.

  5. 5

Aim for 36g of liquid espresso in 25–30 seconds. Adjust grind finer if too fast, coarser if too slow.

  6. 6

A good shot has a rich, reddish-brown crema. Drink within 10 seconds.

Total Time12–24 hrs

GrindExtra Coarse
Lava Tip

Dark Roast Eruption makes a cold brew so smooth it barely needs anything added. Try it straight over ice.

  1. 1

Grind 100g of coffee extra coarse — like rough gravel.

  2. 2

Combine with 800ml of cold, filtered water in a jar or pitcher.

  3. 3

Stir to saturate all grounds. Cover and refrigerate.

  4. 4

Steep for 12 hours for a lighter brew, or 24 hours for full strength concentrate.

  5. 5

Strain through a fine mesh strainer or paper filter. It may take a few minutes.

  6. 6

Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Dilute 1:1 with water or milk to serve.
